The
Law (in Plain English) for Crafts
by Leonard DuBoff
No matter how
much fun or how profitable it can be to etch glass, you still have
to know how the law relates to you as an artist and craftsperson.
Even if you consider yourself a "manufacturer" who etches
commercial items like glass awards or table tops, you will need
this information.
The author is
a well known practicing attorney in arts law, and he is filling
a need to have legal information written in understandable English
rather than in 'legalese'. Learning the information in this book
can save you hundreds to thousands of dollars in attorney's fees
and may save you more than that if it helps you stay legal in your
business. An acquaintence of ours came very close to getting sued
by CocaCola for etching its logo on some drinking glasses -
that were ordered by a Coke distributor! He found out the
hard way (as did the distributor) that just being a distributor
of the product did not confer the rights to use the logo. If he
had read this book, he could have completely avoided the problem.
Chapters in
the book include: Contracts, Warranties & Disclaimers, Keeping
Taxes Low, Getting Paid for Your Work, Insurance, Trademarks, Copyrights,
Trade Secrets, Licensing, Working at Home, Commercial Leases and
much more. There are 9 important legal forms in the appendix, plus
several sample letters of notification. Just using one of the forms
instead of getting the form from an attorney could save you much
more than the price of the book.
